Oxygenator

he oxygenator is one of the main and essential components of the CPB circuit: it acts as the lungs by adding oxygen to infused blood and by removing carbon dioxide from venous blood during cardiac surgery.

Ordinarily, in fact, blood is drained from the heart and lungs to the reservoir and returned oxygenated with a pump and an artificial lung (oxygenator or gas-exchanger).
